Shaz  Asks...

Hi.
I was going to have an abortion at 7 weeks-but then the early morning before i went in to the centre-i miscarried a big clot, after already bleeding for a few days. When i went in to the centre, they did a normal scan and took a pregnancy test by urine that took 15 minutes. They said everything is negative and they couldn't see anything in the scan.So they let me go home and told me to take a pregnancy test in 2 weeks time.

It is now 2 weeks and i took a home pregnancy test which was negative. But i am still feeling tired, sick, bloated, energyless etc and i am worried that i could still be pregnant?is this possible as i am really worried-and dont want this! i have also heard people talk about a d&c?whats this and do i need one? What should i do?

What we suggest...

Hi Shaz

Your email came to us through the What Now? website. We are Q2A, we are the information and advice email service from What Now? and your email got passed on to us.

What a worrying time you must have had lately. You did well to take action so quickly when you thought you had a problem and get an abortion booked, and then go back to the clinic when you were bleeding so heavily.

You have got plenty of proof that you are not pregnant. You had a spontaneous abortion at 7 weeks. This is actually very common, more pregnancies end in this way than go full term, so you have no need to worry that you cannot get pregnant and go on to have a baby in the future when you do want to. You had a scan that confirmed your uterus was empty now, and you had a pregnancy test at that time which showed negative - not pregnant. You did another pregnancy test two weeks later and that was also negative. You definitely are not pregnant (assuming you have not had unprotected sex since the first test at the centre when you had the scan).

Nevertheless you say that you still feel tired, and sick, and bloated - all signs that you think can be of pregnancy. They can be, but they are also signs of stress and worry. We think you have been very stressed, still are quite worried, and maybe feel a little guilty that you got pregnant etc in the first place. So this is probably all your nerves still affecting you. If you really feel worried then we would suggest seeing your doctor - you could be anaemic after loosing blood in the spontaneous abortion and you might benefit from a tonic. We hope this reassures you.

You also ask what a D and C is. It stands for dilation and curettage and is the scraping of the lining of the uterus. There are two main reasons for performing a D and C:

- An evacuation D and C is performed in a recently pregnant woman to remove tissue remaining in the womb
-A gynaecological D and C is part of the investigation of a woman who is experiencing heavy or irregular periods

The scan you had at the centre would have also checked to see whether you needed a D and C, but as this was not mentioned we would guess that it was not judged to be necessary. It is not usually necessary with early spontaneous abortions. You could discuss this with your doctor perhaps?
