Q2A
Got a question about......
This is our reply.......
Firstly you can go on to www.cascaid.co.uk and use the kudos system to help match you to careers you may be interested in, based on your answers to questions about your likes and dislikes. You need to register first which is a simple, free process. You may be able to access this at school or at your local InfoCentre For Young People as well. (We give the address further on). The quiz takes you through various stages - qualifications you are aiming to achieve, questions about your likes and dislikes and health etc which will in turn give you a matched list of careers to explore further.
Alternatively you can go onto www.prospects.ac.uk and under 'jobs and work' click on 'explore different types of jobs' and again go through a quiz assessing your strengths, weaknesses, preferred choices etc. Here also you have to register with the website first but it is straightforward and is free so don't worry. Although the website is generally geared up for people who have got degrees and are looking for work it is an excellent site for anyone of any age to research into jobs that would suit them, as well as looking at different types of jobs, further study, voluntary work, CV's and interview techniques and so on. On the site you can also email a careers adviser, have your CV evaluated and talk to others online. However be aware that some of these things like CV evaluation and talking to a careers adviser will cost you money. You can just explore on the site the kind of jobs that link with the subjects you are studying at no cost.
Another source of help would be the Young People's Worker attached to your school. They can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses to see what kind of jobs would suit you best. There are no right or wrong answers so don't worry - it's just best to be clear about the things you love and the things you hate, for instance if you don't like public speaking ideally you don't want a job that involves that on a daily basis. If you have an allergy to animals then you don't want to be working in a vet's surgery or on a farm etc. However if you enjoy writing then perhaps a job that involves quite a bit of that would suit and so on.
You could also go to your local library and access their career books there. A good one to look at would be 'Jobfile - the essential careers handbook' which lists all the different careers and what the jobs entail as well as what qualifications you need etc. Your local library should have a heap of career books to help you decide. Once you decide the kind of job you want to do then you can plan further ahead in terms of further study you need to do and any voluntary work etc that would be useful for experience etc. A good website for volunteering opportunities is www.doit.org.uk. Websites to help you further once you find the career you want to go into are:
www.steps4me.co.uk
www.doit.org.uk
www.ucas.co.uk
It would also be worth looking at the local prospectus on line at www.steps4me.co.uk
We hope we have answered your enquiry and that you find out the kind of jobs you want to pursue.
Good luck!
