This is our reply.......
Hi PGCE, thanks for your enquiry about studying for a PGCE.
We'll answer your questions in the order that you've asked them.
Although you've already done a degree you may still be able to get some financial help
with the costs of your post-graduate studies.
You will have to pay tuition fees and the amount of these may vary depending on your
chosen college or university. For example there are no 2010 figures on Manchester
University's website but their tuition fees if you had started this year would be £3,225. You can contact them by phone or keep checking on their websites. The fees for the course at Edgehill are £3,290.
You maybe eligible for help to pay for the cost of your studies; we can't say for definite
because we don't know your household circumstances. You may be eligible to apply for
the Student Loan for Fees to help towards paying for the tuition fees, and the Student
Loan for Maintenance to help with your living costs. These become repayable when you start to earn £15,000 or more per year. These amounts are for this current academic year, they may increase next year:
# Student Loan for Fees: up to £3,225
# Student Loan for Maintenance living in the parental home: £3,383
Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible for part or all of a non-repayable
Maintenance Grant of up to £2,906. If you receive some or all of this the amount of your Maintenance Loan will be reduced because they'll only give you the money once, but it means you'll have less of a loan to pay back. There is a student finance calculator at:
www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/calculator/studentfinancecalculator
You apply for your loans to:
# Student Finance England, telephone 0845 300 50 90, open Monday-Friday 8am-
8pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-5.30pm. You can also apply online at:
https://secure.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/protocol/registration/register
In addition to this help you may also be eligible for a non-taxable bursary of £9,000. This is because there is a shortage of Design and Technology teachers. You apply for this through your place of study.
The nearest PGCE courses in Design and Technology are:
# Manchester University, Oxford Road, Manchester. M13 9PL. Telephone: 0161
275 4740. Website: www.man.ac.uk
# Edgehill University, St. Helen's Road, Ormskirk. Telephone: 0800 195 5063.
Website: www.edgehill.ac.uk
We guess Manchester might be the most convenient for you as there's a good bus
service, the X43.
The course at Manchester lasts for 10 months and there's no part-time or distance study option. The course at Edgehill is 1 year full-time or 3 years part-time.
You apply for PCGE courses through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry's website
It appears to be a very similar process to applying through UCAS for undergraduate courses so you should find it straightforward. They're open for applications from September each year and it's recommended that you get your application in before the end of November if you want to be considered by your first choice college or university.
As well as the websites we've already mentioned we also found these helpful:
#The Training and Development Agency for schools: www.tda.gov.uk

We hope you find the information in our reply helpful. Please email us again if you think
we can help, about this or anything else.
Best wishes from q2a.
