Q2A
Got a quick question about......
periods from a young woman who is 15 and not had a period for about four months, her GP has done lots of blood tests and they have come back fine, but when she did have them they went on for a very long time, up to 3 weeks, and then would not come again for a couple of months....
This is our reply.......
There are a number of factors that can distrupt a girl's menstrual cycle in the early years.
For some it naturally takes a couple of years for a regular pattern to develop, for others they may have erratic cycles until they have children. It might be useful to check out with your mum whether her cycle took a regular pattern when she first started her periods.
But stress, in particular, can have a big effect on periods, and can disrupt and even stop periods happening altogether. Also, as we guess you know, having an eating disorder and being very underweight can stop periods, and so can doing excessive exercise. As your doctor is aware of your concern, and has done tests that have come fine we think you probably don't need to worry about this too much. As your doctor is aware of other things going on for you we guess he/she is taking that into consideration too (the stress angle).
But if you do still feel very concerned go back to the doctor. Sometimes they will prescribe the contraceptive pill which will replicate a monthly bleed, although it is not a
proper period, but it can help the body get into the routine!
We would need more space than we have on quick q2a to talk about your worries on
eating, so we'll do another quick q2a for that, but really we could say a lot more, if you
wanted us to, email us again if you want to about it.
