What we suggest...
Hi lilly, thanks for contacting q2a about music projects in the Doncaster area.
We can't guarantee that any of the following organisations will offer you a placement but here are our ideas:
- Doncaster Youth Service runs a wide range of projects for young people, including music. You can contact them either at their main office:Elmfield House, South Parade, Doncaster, DN1 2EH. Telephone: 01302 862495 / 734201. eMail: youth.admin@doncaster.gov.uk. Or you can contact any of the centres direct. There are too many to list here but you can find a full list at: http://www.doncaster.gov.uk/Images/1344_YOUNGONCE_tcm2-7630.PDF, page 8 onwards
- Doncaster College, Waterdale, Doncaster. DN1 3EX. Telephone: 01302 553553. Website: www.don.ac.uk . Email: infocentre@don.ac.uk . They offer Music and Performing Arts courses up to degree level and may have projects going with their students
- Doncaster New Deal for Communities, a government initiative tackling deprived communities. You can contact their administration assistants on telephone: 01302 735761/862636. They have various projects running in the Netherhall/Hyde Park/Hexthorpe/Balby Bridge/Woodfield area of Doncaster. They are currently planning the next HotHouse Festival which runs from 9-23rd March 2009, and will include a wide range of music, so they might have something that you can get involved with
- Doncaster South City Learning Centre, Weston Road, Balby, Doncaster. DN4 8ND. Telephone: 01302 313006; mobile: 07530 180457. Email: enquiries@doncastersouthclc.net . Website: http://www.doncastersouthclc.net/page--index.html. They are running projects in schools until November 2008, including the creative and media industries. You may be too late for this year but it may be worth contacting them to see what they may be able to offer in the future
- Higher Rhythm, 53 - 57 Netherhall Road, Doncaster. DN1 2PG. Telephone: 01302 327769. Website: http://www.higherrhythm.co.uk. Open Monday to Friday 9.30am
- 10pm. They're a not-for-profit company providing the following services:
- recording, post production, training, artist development, record label, community radio, media duplication, art gallery, Doncaster Music Week
Theatres:
- Doncaster Civic Theatre, Waterdale, Doncaster. DN1 3ET. Telephone: 01302 342349. Website: http://www.doncastercivic.co.uk/pages/index.htm
- Doncaster Little Theatre, 1 East Laith Gate, Doncaster. DN1 1JD. Telephone: 01302 340422. Website: www.thedoncasterlittletheatre.co.uk http://www.thedoncasterlittletheatre.co.uk
Live music venues:
- Doncaster Dome, Doncaster Lakeside, Bawtry Road, Doncaster. DN4 7PD. Telephone: 01302 370777. Email via their website: http://www.the-dome.co.uk/
- The Leopard, 1 West Street, Doncaster, DN1 3AA. Telephone: 01302 363054
If none of these are able to help you, they may suggest other organisations which can.
You could also:
- contact local TV/radio: BBC South Yorkshire, 54 Shoreham Street, Sheffield, S1 4RS. Telephone: 0114 273 1177. e-mail: south.yorkshire@bbc.co.uk
- ask students who are on your course in the years above you where they did placements (and if they were any good!)
- ask your tutors, family, friends - they may have informal contacts in the music business
We hope you find this helpful and you're successful in finding a placement, or it at least sets you off in the right direction. Please email us again if you need to, about this or anything else. Good luck with your studies!
Best wishes from q2a.
