Aussie Asks...
I am 20 and want to emigrate to Australia. My brother lives there with his Dad and I can live with them but I'm really confused by all the visas and what I need to do and if I can just go. I have been to college doing a dancing course but would like to either go to Uni in Australia or join the police force out there. Please help me
What we suggest...
Hi aussie
Thanks for your enquiry to q2a.
You have asked for information on emigrating to Australia.
To emigrate to Australia you will need to apply for a visa. As you have mentioned it can be confusing as there are so many.
The website below gives general information about visas - it's good just to read through as an introduction.
http://www.traveltoaustralia.write101.com/emigratetoaustralia.htm
It might be that you could apply for a visa under the Australian Family Visa. As you can read at the above website the Government of Australia encourages emigration in order to bring families together and you should be sponsored by a close family member. To read more detailed information about a Family Visa go to:
http://www.australia-migration.com/page/Family_and_Spouse_Visas/83
Your brother may be able to help you with the above option and perhaps can give you helpful information. We don't know whether he was born in Australia or whether he emigrated there, himself, and if so, how ? His dad may have some good advice for you on the process and how to make things run smoothly for you if you do decide to go ahead.
There are also holiday/working visas.
A holiday visa would give you a chance to visit your family, spend some time in a new country and get to know the culture out there as well as experiencing a new climate and lifestyle.
However, when you have looked at the range of visas available, you should find it useful to find out more @
http://www.uk.embassy.gov.au/
This is the official website of the Australian High Commission in the United Kingdom and gives access to lots more information and the required forms for visas, etc.
You might be particularly interested in two links in the left-hand menu on the home page - 'Visas, Migration and Citizenship' and 'Study in Australia'. If you follow the 'Study in Australia' link you will find a list of websites that give more information regarding university study, courses, etc. plus information about Student Visas. The Student Visa link takes you to
http://www.uk.embassy.gov.au/lhlh/Visas%5fand%5fMigration.html
You can also find more information student visa options @
http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/chooser/
You might find it useful to attend an information day. Visa - Go offer information days on emigration and visas. We would say that there seems to be a payment required for tickets to these events. You can book a place online at:
http://www.visa-go.com/l/migration-information-days-events-I224/
The nearest one to your town is Liverpool on the 24th October.
There are websites that offer online assessment. If you think this might be useful for you, you could have a look @
http://www.visabureau.com/australia/online-visa-assessments.aspx
We understand that completing an Online Assessment is simple, free and carries no obligation. This assessment may not be for you as although the online assessment seems to be free of charge, you are asked to nominate your preferred contact number and a convenient time of day for a consultant to ring you. You may not want anyone to get in touch with you. Also this website is operated by a comp nay - 'The Australian Visa Bureau' - a division of Visa Bureau Ltd, an independent UK company specialising in visa and immigration services to Australia.
You have also mentioned that you might like to join the Police Force in Australia. It would seem that each state in Australia is responsible for its own Police Force. As an example of what may be required, the following website gives information about the recruitment process to become a police officer in the State of Queensland:
http://www.police.qld.gov.au/join/recruitment/selectionProcess/stageOne.htm
Although already qualified police officers in this country can be accepted into the Police Force in Australia, applicants have to go through a selection process in this country beforehand. If you were considering that you might like to join the Police Force were you to emigrate to Australia then you would have to go through their career development process from the beginning. The qualifications you would require would probably depend on the kind of position you would aspire to.
To give you some idea of what may be required, in this country, this can vary from Level 1 to 2 qualifications, such as required for Police Community Support Officer to Level 5 qualifications, such as a Police Officer or Police Scenes of Crime Officer. A Level 2 has no set qualifications but GCSEs such as English and maths or equivalent qualifications may be welcome. For level 5, you will need the relevant qualifications to take a degree - usually 2 - 3 A levels and some GCSEs (A* - C) or other equivalent qualifications.
If you think it would be helpful to find out more about police recruitment in this country then you could have a look @
http://www.policecouldyou.co.uk/
If you are particularly interested in joining the Police in Australia then perhaps your brother could find out more about police recruitment in the state where he lives. Going out to Australia for a short time eg on a tourist visa could provide the opportunity to find out more about their Police Service and whether you would like to maybe take up citizenship there.
If you want to find out more about Australia in general there's lots of information @
http://www.australia.com/
Emigrating to Australia could be a very big decision for you. It is probably something you should talk to your family in Australia about as well as family and friends in this country. However, in the end, it will be your decision. We hope everything works out for you.
If you want to talk to us some more about your plans or about anything else please get in touch with us again.
Good Luck
