What we suggest...
Hi apprenticeships
We understand from your enquiry that you want to do an apprenticeship involving nurseries and are wondering which nearby nurseries offer this. We will come on to this in a moment, but first would like to say a little bit about apprenticeships in general and apprenticeships in child care in particular.
Many young people favour the opportunity to work and study at the same time through an apprenticeship rather than full-time study. For the most part an apprentice cannot be in full time education in order to participate in such a programme, though an apprenticeship allows them to gain work experience, study for a technical qualification and earn money at the same time. Today's apprenticeships are available in a variety of industries including beauty, health care, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, administration and more.
Apprenticeships are usually carried out under the supervision of an employer, so if you are interested in apprenticing for a particular employer then you'll want to contact them directly as early as possible. We would hope that there would be some information at Rathbone on applying for apprenticeships in your area. Have you talked to the Young People's Worker there? Some local recruitment agencies may also carry information about open apprenticeships, and the national Apprenticeships Helpline (08000 150 600) will also be able to offer more information on open apprenticeships and how to apply for them. Some apprenticeships do require specific educational qualifications such as English, Science and Maths. As apprenticeships are a gateway to a specific industry, you should apply for an apprenticeship with the same professionalism and maturity you would a full time job.
Now for some information about Child Care Apprenticeships:
Children need to be taken care of all the time - even when their parents and carers aren't around, which is why professional childcare is so important. This Apprenticeship is for people who work with children from 0 to 16 (and their families). They make sure children are looked after, and kept active, happy and nourished. They also help children develop social and practical skills.
Children's care, learning and development can take place in a great variety of places: in daycare centres, crèches, playgroups, hospitals and community-based programmes, to name a few. As an Apprentice, the exact nature of your job role will depend on your employer, though you'll be working in a supervised setting. You could learn to keep children safe, methods of play that promote development and learning, and ways to build positive relationships with children. You could also choose to learn about working with children with special needs.
Just to reiterate, the main information source on apprenticeships is the website www.apprenticeships.org.uk and the helpline number, as above is 0800 150 600.
Quite often you have to find your own placement which can be daunting in itself especially if there is a lot of competition in your area. Have you rung around the nurseries in your area to see if they are taking anybody on?
Some of the local nurseries in your area are:
Busy Bees Nursery, School Lane, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6QE, Tel: 01772 324644Sceptre Nursery, Sceptre House, Sceptre Way, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6AW, Tel: 01772 694747
Dowry House Nursery School, 55 St Mary's RD, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6TE, Tel: 01772 628410
Oakmount, Kellet Lane, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6AN, Tel: 01772 628020
This is just a starter for ten list, there will be more listed in the Yellow Pages and similar. Even if they are not offering apprenticeships at the moment they may know of places that are.
Another place you go to is your local info - centre as they quite often hear of places or people that are willing to take apprentices on. Your local info centre is:
The Urban Exchange, Mount St, Preston, PR1 8BQ, tel: 01772 255306. Open 9.30am - 5pm Monday - Friday, or you might prefer the InfoCentre for Young People at West Paddock, Leyland, usually open week day afternoons, tel: 01772 621077 or the one at 1 Balfour Court, Leyland, which is open during the whole day Monday to Friday, tel: 01772 450800. A Young Person's Worker at any of these centres will be able to help you search, and you can use the phones and computers for free to contact nurseries etc.
We are not sure if you've had any information on salary, but it can range from approximately £9,000 - £12,000 once fully qualified.
You can choose to opt for either Level 2 (Apprenticeship) or further advance onto Level 3
(Advanced Apprenticeship), once you have completed level 2.
You've also told us that at present your studying the NVQ level 2 in childcare and development. This is a really useful qualification to have if your interested in working with children and we hope your enjoying it so far!
Have you also checked out the website www.steps4me.co.uk which is specifically for young people aged between 14 - 19 years of age, and who are exploring training opportunities in Lancashire. If you click on the 'browse subjects' and then 'Health, public services & care' section, it will list courses that can be studied in that subject and also apprenticeships available.

So, in summary, we have given you some local nurseries which you can contact to see if they are intending to offer any apprenticeships, and suggested where else to look for more nurseries, we have suggested contacting a Young People's Worker at a local InfoCentre who will be able to support you in your search, and you will be able to use the resources there. We have also recommended you look at the Steps4Me website and we have listed the Apprenticeship opportunities in child care so that you can follow those up.
We hope you find this helpful and that you are able to secure yourself the Apprenticeship you desire. There is increasing pressure on places and opportunities, so start searching as soon as possible and keep positive.
Let us know how you get on.
Good luck, and good luck with your current course.
Best wishes q2a
