What?  Asks...

My last period begun in the middle of june and approaching the end of august i've not had one since then and i'm scared. I've taken 2 pregnancy tests and they both displayed negative results. I thought this would be the case as I've only ever used contraception during sex. But i an still worried. I've become really bloated and i'm never hungry but I've begun to eat loads which is really unusual as i'm normally quite healthy. What is going on?

What we suggest...

Hi

Thanks for your email.

You've told us that you are worried because you haven't had a period since the middle of June. Missing a period can be worrying but it doesn't necessarily mean you are pregnant. On the other hand, although you have had 2 negative pregnancy tests, that doesn't mean you aren't pregnant either.

The official name for not having periods is Amennorrhoea. There are quite a few reasons why your periods don't appear:

* Pregnancy - the one we always think of first
* Losing weight
* Gaining weight
* Over exercising
* Stress
* Major life changes such as moving home, new job, bereavement
* Mental health and emotional disorders
* Hormonal problems

Do any of those fit your personal situation do you think? It feels like you would probably be best to tell your GP and see if he/she can account for your missing periods.

You've told us that you have become bloated and your appetite has increased. It's possible that these aren't signs of pregnancy as people often feel sick rather than hungry in early pregnancy. It would probably be a good idea to be checked out to see if everything is OK. You could go to your own GP, as we have already suggested, or visit a young peoples sexual health clinic. Here are some that are hopefully accessible to you:

They will talk to you, do another pregnancy test and give you advice as to what to do next. Another alternative, if you did not want to go face to face yet, would be to give NHS Direct a ring, on 0856 46 47 and taken advice from the nurses who work on that service.

You told us that you always use contraception but we have to point out that no contraception is 100% safe, even if you follow the instructions properly. If it's really important that you don't get pregnant, then it's suggested that you go double dutch, in other words use two forms of contraception. This usually means taking the contraceptive pill and using a condom.

We hope things work out.

Best wishes
