Q2A

Got a quick question ......

heyya can yuu get prgnanti if your on your period /can you be preganant when your on
your period help from zzzz;ll;p;;a

This is our reply.......

Yes, you can get pregnant when you're on your period if you have either a very short or a
very long menstrual cycle. This is because you may ovulate (release an egg) very close
to the time of your period (either before or after your period starts) and, because sperm
can survive for several days, the egg may be fertilised.

You can be pregnant and still have bleeds, but it's not a real period though, it's called
breakthrough bleeding. It just means that the hormones that control your menstrual cycle
are still active.

Using a regular method of contraception and/or condoms can reduce the risk of pregnancy
at all times in the menstrual cycle. Supplies of contraceptives are free from young
people's clinics and you can find you nearest clinic by ringing Worth Talking About, 0800
28 29 30 or searching on http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Sexualhealthtopics/Pages/Sexual-
health-hub.aspx.
