Q2A
Got a quick question ......
hey. i'm current 20 and doing a level 2 youth work qualification which is due to finish at the
beginning of February.
After this time i am looking to go abroad and work in an orphanage or a children home or
even street kids, i don't mind where i go but what somewhere challenging and where i can
make a really impact.
Bascially i'm just wanting to find out if you know of any organisation which run things like
this and the prices etc...
This is our reply.......
Organisations you could investigate include VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) which is
the one most people might think of first. To volunteer you need to have a minimum of two
years experience in your professional field in a skill area where they have roles available.
Most countries also need an official qualification (usually a degree) to secure a work
permit - that might not be for you. We have also found for example www.i-to-i.com. They
offer community work with children in Ecuador for 4 weeks from £939, excluding flights!
There was also www.frontier.ac.uk which offered work in Ecuador in a child care day
centre from £795 for 2 weeks. Perhaps it would be worth thinking about making an
impact closer to home? We would suggest looking at either http://www.do-it.org which has
a national database of opportunities - they have an information line too on 0800 374 991
or try Community Service Volunteers who do offer long periods of full time volunteering
opportunities with bed and board and as far as we can see still do not expect a financial
contribution from the volunteer. Their website is www.csv.org.uk.
