Q2A
Got a quick question ......
from a 19 year old whose mother had dressed him and made him dress as a girl up to the
age of 14, they asked us if there were any helplines specifically for people with this
sort of issue.
This is our reply.......
We're not sure from the first line of your enquiry whether you're a 19 year old man who
was dressed as a girl until you were 14, or whether you're 19 years old and confused
about your real gender or sexual identity because you were dressed as a girl for so long.
Although you have not mentioned this as an issue you have faced, sometimes parents
dress their child as a different gender if they are born with what is known as "ambiguous
genitalia". This is where it has not been easy to tell whether they are a boy or a girl, as
they may have characteristics of both. Sometimes parent "pick" a gender for their child
and then when the child grows up they might find that they themselves do not identify with
this gender.
We understand that having been dressed as a girl for so long could have caused conflict,
maybe between you and your Mum, and also within your own mind. If you are now secure
in your gender and sexual identity but need support to come to terms with what happened
in your earlier life you can get support from::
