in ancient times were the army and the police the same thing

Police in the modern sense of the term have only been around for a few centuries and
didnt exist as such in ancient times. The first police force was created by the government
of King Louis XIV of France in 1667 to police the city of Paris, then the largest city in
Europe. Armies however have been in existence as long as leaders have been able to
organise a group of men to defend or acquire land and possessions.
