Mad Max  Asks...

What are the local facilities in terms of finding employment apart from the job centre?

What we suggest...

Hi Mad Max

Thank you for contacting us with your enquiry. We understand that you want to find out where you can search for jobs other than your local job centre.

Your local job centre is usually the first point of contact in terms of job searches especially if you're on JSA as its part of your terms and conditions to search for jobs there when signing on. You have put that you are from Doncaster. The local central job centre for Doncaster is:

Crossgate House
Wood Street
Doncaster
South Yorkshire
UK
DN1 3LL
Telephone: 01302 503503

Or visit jobcentreplus.com and access the job pages through there.

There are many other ways you can find out about jobs in your local area. A list is below:

- Ask your family and friends if they know about any possible job opportunities
- Go to your local library and look in the local papers for vacancies
- Look in the business directories to find out which companies are in your area and the sort of jobs likely to be available.
- Use the internet either at home if access to one or at the local library to search for opportunities
- Think about volunteering as that might increase your chances of success in seeking employment in the future
- Register with local employment agencies
- Go to Connexions and see if the staff there have heard of any job opportunities - although we accept that you might be considered older than their target age range.

We will now discuss some of the above in more depth.

One of the best ways to find employment quickly is through an employment agency. These are used by employers to find workers quickly, usually for short-term work but this can often lead to more permanent work later. Some agencies only recruit people with specific skills for example secretarial, driving, production work and so on, so it's worth asking them if you decide to ring them. Some do have more general vacancies. Hopefully you then may be able to get the job you want quite quickly through an agency, or you can use it as a way to try out different jobs and gain experience. You tell the agency what skills you've got and they contact you with suitable vacancies. You can register with them either via the phone or call in and see them and fill some forms out. It is advisable to take your CV and Record of Achievement with you.

We are not sure if you have filled out a CV before. It stands for curriculum vitae and has all the useful information for employers such as your name, address, contact details, personal statement, school attended and grades, work experience, past and present jobs and referees.
If you visit our sister website, www.whatnow.co.uk and follow the links down the left hand side for downloads it will take you to a draft CV, a basic letter of application and a really helpful document with loads of links for people seeking work called Job Seeking Guide.

Going back to the recruitment agencies in Doncaster a few are below:

http://www.manpower.co.uk

We found these employment agencies using the internet - www.localrecruit.co.uk/doncaster and it shows 20 so there are many to choose from. The most important thing for you to do when using an employment agency is to keep asking them if there are any suitable jobs available, show your willingness and offer as much flexibility regarding hours etc as you possibly can in order to be successful.

You should also find a list of recruitment agencies in your area using the Yellow Pages; most will be open from 9am-5pm Monday- Friday.

Another suggestion is to ask your family and friends if there are any jobs going where they work - you never know something may turn up, even if it's not ideally what you want its money and something else to add to your CV.

It is also worth searching the internet for jobs, some good websites are:

www.reed.co.uk
fish4jobs.co.uk
www.jobsite.co.uk
www.totaljobs.com

Another idea is to look on your local council vacancies webpage and see if there is anything suitable there. If you type www.doncaster.gov.uk there is a link to the jobs available there.

As you haven't specified what kind of jobs you are looking for do you know what career path you want to take? It may be worth going onto www.prospects.co.uk. On there you can access a variety of jobs and see what qualifications, experience and further contacts for more information.

We hope we have answered your enquiry, please come back if you have any further questions.

Best Wishes
