Q2A
Got a question from Anthony......
This is our reply.......
Hi Anthony, thanks for contacting q2a.
Unfortunately this time of year isn't very good for selling ice cream in a van. As you are 15
you wouldn't be allowed to collect money from customers without direct supervision and
then the handling of the cash has to be by an employed adult, plus you wouldn't be able to
drive the van at this age.
In the UK there are limitations on the type of work young people under school leaving age
can do. A young person aged 14 or over can only be employed in permitted light work.
These are:
Agriculture/horticulture
Newspaper delivery
Shop work
Hairdressing
Office work
Car washing by hand in a private residential setting
Work in a cafe or restaurant (not in the kitchen)
Work in riding stables
Domestic work in hotels and other establishments offering accommodation
The work you are are not allowed to do includes:
Delivering milk
Work in a commercial kitchen
Selling or delivery of alcohol, except in sealed containers
Collecting money or canvassing door to door
In the preparation of meat for sale
In the bar of licensed premises
Work in a factory
Operating machinery
Driving or riding on a vehicle, including agricultural implements
Personal care of residents in a care/nursing home.
If you are determined to sell ice cream then maybe you could try to get a weekend job
helping out in a cafe or do a catering course when you leave school. It also might be worth
contacting the Ice Cream Alliance for further information. They can be contacted at:
Pride Park, Derby. Tel: 01332 203333. Website: www.ice-cream.org. Open hours: Mon -
Thurs 9am - 5pm, Fri 9am - 4pm.
It might be helpful to talk to the Young People's Worker at your school regarding all your
future work and training options.
We hope this reply is helpful.
Best wishes q2a
