Q2A

Got a question from DJ Joshua bell ......

where can i find places to dj in blackburn?

This is our reply.......

Hi DJ Joshua Bell. Many thanks for your enquiry.

As you are 15 at the moment the places where you can DJ will be limited as you
won't be able to DJ in local clubs and bars which are licenced premises and you would
have to be 18 to work there.

However this doesn't mean that you can't practice over the next few years so that you will
be ready to start DJing in more public surroundings when you're 18.

The first place you could try is at your school. Perhaps ask the music teacher if DJ
lessons are in your music class or whether you could practice with their help during the
lunch break or after school. That way you are practicing what you enjoy and learning new
skills. Perhaps you could get involved with the music for any Christmas productions that
your school is putting on?

Outside of school with you being 15 it is probably best to look towards the youth centres
for DJ practice.
There is actually a community music service that has been based in the Highercroft area
of Blackburn that focuses on music. This includes:

# Guitar, Bass, Drums tuition
# Song writing and ensemble playing
# Dj'ing
# Music technology (computer music)
# Sound recording and live sound
# Video editing

This service is aimed at young people aged 9-14 but it would definitely be worth getting in
touch to see if you can be part of it. They might take volunteers to help out so that way
you might be able to volunteer and help out and get DJing experience all at the same time.
Their contact details are:

Roman Road Neighbourhood Centre
Fishmoor Drive
Blackburn
BB2 3UY
01254 666540

You could also check out the local youth centres in your area to see what sessions they
hold as they might do a DJing evening or be willing to hold one. Youth centres in
Blackburn include:

Accrington Road Youth Club - Monday and Wednesday from 6.15 - 9pm.

Audley Youth Club - Friday 7pm - 9.15pm

Bangor Street Club - Monday and Wednesday 6.30 - 9pm

These clubs have a wide range of opportunities for young people aged 11-16 to take part in
activities, get involved in projects, learn new skills and meet other young people. Activities
in Youth Centres include:

- Music themed evening
- Cooking sessions
- Sports activities
- Craft sessions
- Specific talks on a wide range of subjects
- Open sessions where you can just go to chill out

To access more information on these and other clubs in your area you can enquire at:

Young People's Services
Moss Street
Blackburn
BB1 5JT
England
Tel: 01254 298630
Email: yps@blackburn.gov.uk

You could also perhaps ask your Young People's Service at the address above of any DJ
activities coming up in the near future.

You can also access local information on places to go and what to do in the Blackburn
area via www.urbwd.com so it is worth having a browse on their website as well.

Finally perhaps you could practice DJing at with your family and friends so that you are
gaining the experience with crowds as well as doing something you enjoy.

We wish you luck in practising your DJing skills. Please come back to us if you need any
further information on this or anything else.

Best Wishes
