Q2A
Got an enquiry ........
now that i am 14 what job can i do.
This is our reply.......
Hi Gareth, thanks for your email.
There is quite a wide range of jobs you can do now you are 14. There are rules about the
sort of work you can do. Generally, it must not be physically hard work or dangerous, or
expose you to moral harm. Here are some examples of the sort of work you can do:
# in agriculture or horticulture e.g. on a farm or in a garden centre or nursery
# at riding stables
# delivering newspapers
# in a shop or supermarket stacking shelves
# in a hairdressing salon, office, café or restaurant
# in hotels as, for example cleaning the rooms
# car-washing or gardening for your neighbours
# in TV, theatre or similar work, as long as you have a performance licence from
your local authority
Examples of the work you are not allowed to do are:
# Delivering milk
# Work in a commercial kitchen
# Selling or delivery of alcohol, except in sealed containers
# Collecting money or canvassing door to door
# In the preparation of meat for sale
# In the bar of licensed premises
# Work in a factory
# Operating machinery
# Driving or riding on a vehicle, including agricultural implements
# Personal care of residents in a care/nursing home.
When you find a job you need to have a certificate of employment from your local council.
The person you work for should tell the local council within a week of employing you and
apply for a certificate. If your employer doesn't do this your parent or carer can contact
the council and apply for one. We guess your local council is Lancashire County Council
and depending on which part of Lancashire you live in you can contact one of the following
Child Employment and Entertainment Officers:
# Lancaster, Morecambe & Wyre, 01524 585871
# Preston & Fylde, 01772 531799
# West Lancs, Chorley & South Ribble, 01257 517344
# Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Rossendale, Burnley & Pendle, 01282 873090
Alternatively an application form for a certificate of employment can also be downloaded
and printed off from the council's website:
Your local authority may have extra rules to the ones listed above (called by-laws) about
the sort of work you can do so you or your parent or carer can ask about these as well.
Alternatively they can be downloaded from:

ws_2009.pdf?sysredir=y>
There are more rules about the hours you can work which are mainly to prevent the work
you do from interfering with your education:
# no working during school hours on school days, including lunchtime
# no more than 2 hours work on a school day
# no more than 1 hour in the morning before school starts
# no work before 7am and after 7pm
# no more than 12 hours in any week you are at school
# no more than 5 hours on Saturdays (8 hours if you're 15 years old) or any other
day which is not a school day
# no more than 2 hours on Sundays
# no more than 25 hours a week in the school holidays (35 hours a week if you're
15 years old)
# you must have 2 consecutive weeks holiday from work during the school holidays
# you must have a 1 hour break after 4 hours of work
We hope you find the information in our reply helps you to find a suitable job. Please
email us again if you think we can help further, about this or anything else.
Best wishes from q2a.
