Got an enquiry ........
In the next couple of months i will be moving to Methil in Fife and i am wanting to find little
bit of information on whats going on round there for young people like youth clubs etc. I am
interested in music i also would like to go to college when i move up there.
This is our reply.......
Hi Gemma, many thanks for your email.
It's understandable that you want to find out things young people can do in the area you
are moving to and about the college opportunities. Hopefully having this knowledge will make
your move more enjoyable and you will know what to expect.
With regards to things you can do in Methil if you go onto the website
www.methilcentre.org.uk you will see a variety of things you can do there. These include
using the cybercafé where you can browse the internet, the coffee bar where you can go
for refreshments, for a break and meet new people. They also have a youth club evening
on a Wednesday where if you're interested in music you can take your own instrument so
you may like that. The youth centre time is 7pm - 9pm on a Wednesday evening.
Hopefully you would meet new people there and possibly new friends as well. A sexual
health nurse is also available there that night as well.
The centre also has snooker and billiards available throughout the day and evening as well
although you may need to book a table if you are interested. You need to telephone 01333
303173 if you are.
The centre's contact details are:
Methil Community Education Centre
Bowling Green Street
Methil
KY8 3DH
Tel: 01334 659346
Opening hours are:
Monday - Friday
9am - 5.15pm
5.45pm - 10pm
Depending on the type of disability you have they may offer further help as well but
you would need to discuss this with them further.
In terms of other things you could do in the area these could include:
- The Duke of Edinburgh Award which you could do through college or on your own.
(There is a link on the bottom of the Methil centre's page or you can go to www.dofe.org
and look at what is involved and what opportunities are available).
- Volunteer Scotland - www.volunteerscotland.org.uk/ on there you can type your
postcode in and see what opportunities are available. Although you can volunteer at any
age there are sometimes restrictions in certain volunteer roles. This is due to the type of
opportunity, or because the organisation only has insurance in place for those aged 18 or
over.
- Another place to look for things to do in the area is Fifedirect.org.uk which is the
local council. If you click on the A-Z and then click on the letter you will find Methil. On
Methil's page you can then click on 'what's on'. When looking we found a festival of music
theatre which is running from 23rd April 2010 - 9th October 2010. Depending on when you
move there you may want to help with that or possibly contact them for future events.
Contact details are:

or help out/be involved in:

- There are also some sports centres in Methil if you are interested in sporting activities.
The one in Methil is:
Savoy Sports Centre
Byron Street
Methil
Leven
Fife
KY8 3JQ
Tel: 01333 423 443
- You could also visit the www.activescotland.org.uk website and see if there is
anything on there that you would like to do as well.
With regards to going to college, we have found the colleges within 10-30 minutes
distance from Methil so you can browse their websites and see what courses they have to
offer and what you want to do. Without knowing the specific course(s) you want to do, at
what level and your previous qualifications we can't narrow the courses down for you.
However you can contact them yourself for further help or contact us again with the type of
courses you want to do and we can do a search for you. Please bear in mind though that
most courses start in September 2010 and depending on when you move to Methil will
depend on whether you start college in September 2010 or the following year. This will
also be determined by what course you want to do and the demand for that course. The
colleges are:

Again if you told them about the specific disability you have they may be able to help with
grants or additional support dependent on what type of disability you have. Each college
may also have their own groups that you can join such as music or sports groups /
activities so worth enquiring about that as well.
We hope you find this information useful, good luck with your move and please come back
to us if you need any further assistance on this or anything else.
Best Wishes
