 11N Asks...

My mothers thrown me out where do i go? what do i do?

What we suggest...

Hi 11N, thanks for contacting q2a.

We're very sorry to hear this, and are concerned for you, but we hope that your situation has become a little more settled by the time you get our reply. If you're ever in an emergency situation like this again the best way to get help quickly is to contact any of these:

- ring our freephone telephone helpline 0800 51 11 11, open 10am-10pm every day
- text us on 07786 51 11 11, opening times as above
- Doncaster's Social Care Team, daytime telephone number: 01302 737777, open 8.30am-5.00pm Monday-Friday. Their address is the Council House, College Road, Doncaster, DN1 3DA
- Doncaster's Emergency Social Services out of hours telephone number: 01302 796000, open 5.00pm in the evening until 8.30 am the next day
- Connexions Direct, freephone 080 800 13 2 19, open 8am - 2am everyday, longer than us
- Doncaster Police, 0114 2202020, open 24 hours

This is what we'd suggest first of all:

- have you somewhere you can stay short term e.g. other family members, or a friend's?
- can you negotiate with Mum to go back home when things have cooled off?

The official way to get help in this sort of situation is to get professional adults involved in making sure you are safe, as a first priority and then trying to help sort things out between you and your mum. Here are the places you could go:-

- School is one place. If you tell the teachers there, either your pastoral head of care or any teacher or member of staff you get on with they will be able to start to put things in place to help you.

or

- Police - you can go into any police station and explain what has happened. They will help you. If you have a phone you can ring police officer Daren Cawley on 01302 385178 who is based in Conisbrough, or go into the police station in Mexbrough on Adwich Road Mexbrough.

- Social Care - we hope you can get to Mexbrough because that is where the nearest services seem to be, and the Social Care office is in Martinwell Centre, Thompson Avenue, Eddlington Lane, Mexbrough DN12 1JD. Or you could ring 01302 737777 and be put through to them.

Those really are you main immediate options, except for going home and trying to negotiate your way in again, although you may well not feel like doing that. But please do choose at least one of the options we have given you and follow it through. Don't feel worried about going to the Police or Social Care, they have your best interests and safety at heart and will do what they can to help you.

If you do not have access to a phone we suggest you go to the Youth Centre called The Place on Castle Street in Conisbrough, Tel 01709 583175 or 01709 863491. We are sure the staff there will let you use the phone and support you all they can.

If you do contact the Social Care team they may, depending on your situation at home:

- help you to sort out your difficulties at home so that you can go back
- take you into care in a children's home
- take you into care and place you with a foster family, which could be a family member
- help you to move on to independent living once you are 16 years old

None of these are easy options; even with the first one there'll need to be give and take on both sides. The other options could lead to a very unsettled sort of life which may seriously mess up your education and consequently your future career prospects. So if you know that there are things that you and Mum could work on together to make it easier at home, do think seriously about having a go. It only needs to be until you are able to make a planned move e.g. because you're working and earning and can afford your own place, or you're going away to university.

Like we said earlier we hope your situation is not as desperate now and we hope what we've said in our reply is helpful. Please email us again if you think we can help, about this or anything else.

Take care and best wishes from q2a.
